It's just a small thing though, and I think this is an important, well-written book that readers of all ages will like even though this is a YA book. A heart-racing and twisty thriller that grapples so much more than a simple mystery; ACE OF SPADES explores being both queer and Black, and the sinister, destructive nature of white supremacy and racism. I don't often read thrillers but if they were all as brilliantly written as Ace of Spades I don't think I could ever put them down. I had to repeatedly remind myself that this kid is supposed to be 17, not 27. I had heard about this 420 page YA thriller and how it was written by a Muslim student at University and the seven figure book deal that she earned. While the main plot showcases a very peculiar case of racism, it actually highlights how it manifests itself in many ways.

Looking down at my battered sneakers and blazer with loose threads, I feel a sting inside. It makes me wonder who the audience of this book truly is, because I would sooner recommend the KKK handbook than I would recommend Ace of Spades to a young Black reader. Read all the way to the last page. Àbíké-Íyímídé wastes no time jumping into the brunt of the mystery, creating a tremendous amount of suspense only a few pages in. It's one of those books that, when completed, you can only sit in silence and weakly try to process what you just read, your desire for more tugging at your heart. Alhumdulillah, I'm glad I did. This goes so far as Chi's father staying silent when his family is outwardly racist to his own wife and daughter. Devon's father is absent and it is learned he was executed on death row, his mom works three jobs, he has younger brothers and they struggle financial so that he has a chance at education. Eventually it became clear it was less about just messing with Devon and Chi but something more sinister. Ace of Spades has plenty of promise, but this debut title fails to deliver. I love an elite school setting and I especially loved how Iyimide was able to weave important topics like racism, classism, and homophobia into it. No jobs, no money; sell drugs, get money. I am obsessed with the psychology behind the 'mean girl' and with Chiamaka, I really loved being able to challenge the idea that mean girls are one dimensional. Like their parents wouldn't stop loving them—or leave them. Devon lives in a poor neighbourhood, dealing drugs to support his mother and constantly hiding his relationships with boys to avoid her disapproval—and that of the gang members on his block, who he knows will hurt him for being gay. This bullying and targeting unmistakably reflects and takes root in institutionalised racism and how it has shaped society and the future of Black people until this day. If you haven't read this book yet you're doing a disservice to yourself. Like nothing bad would happen to them. By-and-large for both main characters, only their sexual relationships are really explored, and most of them are brief. Most mysteries reveal the perpetrator at the end, so changing the formula is certainly a risk–one that does not particularly pay off here.

I assume that everyone wants to read a book that is like the young adult book equivalent of Get Out meets Gossip Girl, with unlikely friendship and TWO gay relationships and mystery and solving and a tiny hint of dark academia. It's engaging, it's creepy, it screws with your mind, and when the big reveal comes your jaw hits the floor. They all had their roles and their development was amazing. And sometimes, you need a dark, twisty thriller to scare the crap out of you. This book was also pitched as a modern day dark academia, which is also a horribly wrong description of this novel. The story follows the only two Black students at Niveus Private Academy as they suddenly face an anonymous texter, bringing all of their deepest, darkest secrets to light.

The ending also felt a bit rushed but I could forgive a few hastened conclusions and a few frayed incomplete plot threads for that glorious ending.
