I enjoyed it so much more. The place has a claustrophobic feel, riddled with unhappy histories between many of the residents and blighted by what feels like a constant stream of bad luck. The small mining village of Arnhill is the archetypal creepy village, swallowing up the many tragedies and amplifying that atmosphere out into the residents. I didn't find them or the way that they told their story in the least bit compelling and also some of it was so disjointed and unrealistic that it sort of pulled me away from the story and what could have been a great sense of action. And I also fell immediately for Joe Thorne. But then I sat back and pondered on it all and decided that the whole point of some spooky, the reason it is scary, is that it isn't always explained or indeed explainable. Nothing is revealed too early, keeping us on our toes as to what happens – in both timelines! It was the year that Joe's little sister Annie disappeared for two days. C. Her characters, while never exactly likeable, are very real and leave us with the impression that we've met them before, or we know someone exactly like them. J Tudor is a fabulous storyteller and I love how she has a way of bringing the past into the present as she did in Chalk Man. Great story and I've not been able to put it down.
Don't expect this to be something it doesn't claim to be and you have found yourself one of the best horror stories of 2019! The supporting characters too were excellent from the fiendish and feisty Gloria, to Brendan the Irish recovering alcoholic. And is already one of my favourite novels of 2019. Most people being too squeamish to want to live there it has remained unsurprisingly empty. Looking forward to lots more by CJ Tudor... ….. Phew! Written in the first person, Joe is our narrator, although not a very reliable one.

But, it is that added attention to detail on the part of Tudor and the feeling that you get as a reader from them and the book on a whole that makes you realise that you are reading something extra special.
