In reading both books, I interpreted Death-Cast as sort of a villain character, but I feel like in The First to Die at the End, you're reshaping that narrative. Which is exactly how I felt after reading the first book, They Both Die at the End. One small issue is that I think there may have been too many pov's in this book. We had all these iconic moments with Rufus and Mateo and all these interesting intersections of characters because of the Death-Cast system. So sweet, yet bittersweet too. Readers see two boys who decide to find some happiness even when the odds are stacked against them. The two are instantly drawn to one another and explore the city together as the threat of death looms over them both—Valentino has received the call, while Orion is living with a heart condition that could end his life at any moment.

There were beautiful family and friendship elements in this book that made my heart sing. Silvera brings two vastly different boys together and offers a close insight on their doubts and vulnerabilities, as well as strengths and love, in this beautiful contemporary that will leave you with an aching but full heart.
You may be born into a family, but you walk into friendships. Loved this story even more than the first novel.
The relationship between Orion and Valentino was fast-paced but then once you know your time is limited why wait? Genres: LGBT, Young Adult. Theories: • I WILL cry. Silvera again forces us to really stop and ponder not just the inevitability of death, but whether we're living life or merely surviving. On a serious note: their voices (Adam's writing) didn't confuse me at all. I enjoy seeing the story from different characters perspective, but I felt like this was a bit much. His writing is heartbreaking yet open, honest yet intense. This is literally that "girl comes out of surgery asking where her bf is only to be told 'who do you think gave you your heart'" meme in book form.
The ending is not perhaps what you might expect from a novel that sets it characters up to die from the very beginning.
