Why Leah chose stop motion puppet animation to portray the most intimate fantasy parts of her film and how she animated it. You'd just look at Leah, and go, "Wow, here I am a vessel for her story", and that charges you. I think it's fantastic that there is a resurgence in films about particularly teenage girls. Because Joe collected a lot of these atmospheric sounds on location it really lent itself in the edit room to have these textured, visceral, atmospheric sounds of crickets in a field, or howling wind, or things on fire, things that were organic to the world of the film. LM: It can be quite marginalising, yet it's also empowering at the same time. Those sorts of things. It's certainly a unique and distinctive shape, but still very clearly a unicorn, and sometimes finding these mythical creatures in serious movies is even more poignant than when they make their appearances in kiddy films. And then there was an air element, which was where the two of them came together, which was about escape, and so there are scenes of them on a trampoline, or there's a bird.
That means there's a higher chance of my podcast being found and subscribed to. And so I worked very closely with our cinematographer Jarin Blaschke on how we would not only create a visual language for the day-to-day realities of the story, but also for the more imaginative sequences.
