It was hard to be sure as we just saw the very edge of them and most of it was hidden behind the peaks and trees we came from earlier. The thick cloud bank on the horizon snuffed out most of the color we were hoping for but it was still gorgeous. I was more interested in the lingering bits of fog hovering in the river valley below us in the opposite direction. Many park visitors head immediately for the justly famous Lake of the Clouds Overlook. Rainbow Falls is one of the unique waterfalls in the area, as it's two waterfalls in one. Since Bond Falls is below a dam you can always be assured of a good water flow even during times of drought. There was just enough soil there for all of my stakes to go in except for 2 which I anchored with big rocks found in camp. The whole trip along the Presque Isle River takes about two to three hours, and is the perfect way to spend a day in the great outdoors. The lake is a prominent feature of the park, and can be viewed at the Lake of the Clouds Overlook at the west terminus of former Michigan highway M-107. By going right, you can see the Lake of the Clouds from both overlooks (which will offer different viewpoints) without backtracking.
While you'll see beautiful scenery and views any time of the year, it is especially popular in the fall, as you'll see from some of our pictures below. Note that the track provided includes a non-accessible route once the visitor reaches the bedrock of the mountain; however, the accessible overlook can be found just to the west of the first sighting of bedrock. This section of trail had a lot of mosquitoes, black flies and ticks. Again I wasn't quite sure what to expect given the drought. They said it had amazing views, reminded us to load up on water and to be careful around the cliffs. The forecast was completely wrong once again.
