In a sea of male singers and songwriters, Sill emerged, along with Joni Mitchell and a handful of others, as one of the few women who wrote and sang their own songs. However, she kept a strong sense of faith and spirituality throughout her life - sometimes saying that she wrote songs that "were aimed at persuading Jesus to give people a break". One song, "Jesus Was a Cross Maker, " had its seeds in a devastating breakup with a fellow songwriter. Born in Southern California in 1944, and dead in '79, Judee Sill's life was brief, yet filled with enough dark drama to satisfy a lifespan twice that long. The first disc of Water's set compiles the eight tracks that were to make up Sill's third Asylum LP (as well as three demo cuts). In the time since her death, her music slipped into obscurity, save for a few prominent fans (Shawn Colvin, Warren Zevon and Jane Siberry all covered her songs at various points in the 1990s). But the story that runs parallel to her rising stardom is one of misfortune and adversity that culminated in her death, at the age of 35, on Nov. 23, 1979. Sadly she did not manage for long; she died of a drug overdose in 1979.
During that process the genius of this tune really sank in and I had a lot of great conversations with people about the idea of Jesus's humanity and if the most evil among us can be redeemed. Save this song to one of your setlists. Lyrically, it's one of the most uplifting songs Sill ever wrote, touching on the notion of facing the end of all things with power and grace. Sill took the credit for composition, arrangements and supervision, while the production was split between Jim Pons (of the Turtles), John Beck (of the Leaves), and Henry Lewy (Graham Nash separately produced "Jesus Was a Cross Maker" with an eye toward releasing it as a single). Though Warren Zevon, the Hollies, and Rachael Yagamata have each recorded notable covers of the song, their versions are all marred by vocal performances that are simply not up to the task of conveying the fluttering cadences of Sill's melody. Few people really remember Judee Sill, which is a great shame, as she had a kind of genius. Contrasting the two openers, right out of the gates "Crayon Angels" seems wimpy and sentimental, while Heart Food begins with a definitive, altogether more authentic statement, celebrating her struggle to find the ragged, rugged road to Kingdom Come. Though the cause, a drug overdose, might have seemed to have resulted from the trappings of such a career — particularly at a time when excess was synonymous with the music industry — Sill's existence was much more labyrinthine. More than anything, these recordings show that as much as Sill could craft memorable songs of her own, she was equally gifted at transforming others. After doing a brief stint in reform school (where a spell as a church organist taught her many of the "gospel licks" that would later surface in her music), Judee attempted a return to collegiate studies and took a job working long hours in a piano bar. In real life, Sill was in love with a "bandit and a heart breaker" but she felt that there must be something inside of him that was good, despite that. She is often associated with the so-called "Laurel Canyon sound" that also included folks like Carole King, but her sound is distanced from those contemporaries by the breadth of her musical knowledge, her stunning attention to detail, and a gorgeous everywoman type of voice, pitch perfect and rendering lyrics that dealt as much with heartbreaking balladry as they did with deep spiritual concerns and cosmos wanderings. The survival plan basically includes having a real, working relationship with my neighbors; growing a garden; and knowing how to fix a car (and trap a squirrel). And is Jesus the one doing all this shady stuff in the song? Judith Lynn Sill was born in Oakland, Calif., on Oct. 7, 1944.
And in the interim, investing time and money in native and community food & health systems that sustain us so when all the big corporations melt down we can rely on what we've been growing for ourselves. "Dead Time Bummer Blues, " one of Sill's first songs, feels more self-conscious lyrically than anything else in her canon, although her piano lines resound strongly. Hyvรถnen's performance is arresting from the first note, with her lightly reverbed alto investing the tune and its lyrics with a heart-melting poignancy without tipping into sappy melodrama. The more I think about it, the more I think of her as one of the geniuses of 20th Century music. She was at the center of the 1970s folk-rock scene in California, alongside contemporaries like Jackson Browne and J. D. Souther. There's a relentless optimism coursing through them, a shock considering that if any singer had the right to dwell on life's injustices, it was Judee Sill, who died at the hands of the demons she tried so hard to escape. Perhaps the bandit and heart-breaker is truly good on the inside.

This batch of songs differed a bit from her first album. All of these tracks begin simply, with spare acoustic guitar or piano figures before swelling with the heft of strings and horns. But I have listened to it more than perhaps I've should've due to Heart Food's appeal to me. She and a friend rented a house from the dealer and formed a jazz trio with a third girl. The pioneer in question is heading for "Kingdom come, " and the image that comes through is obviously inspired by Nikos Kazantzakis' The Last Temptation of Christ, a novel (and later a Martin Scorcese film) that dealt with the image of Jesus as a human being, as flawed as the rest of us.

Now, in what's become an almost common occurrence for earnest, overlooked folkies, a string of reissues over the past couple of years have stirred up attention, and the recent release of her heretofore unknown third album will hopefully allow Sill's story and music to be heard by the wider audience she so richly deserved.

In 1974, Sill recorded material for a third album at the studio of Michael Nesmith, best known as a member of the Monkees. While "The Vigilante" sounds familiar, "Soldier of the Heart" is a rarity in the Sill catalogue – an electric guitar-fueled rocker, complete with solo. He introduced her to heroin. It would be the first of a series of personal tragedies and troubles that formed an undercurrent in her life. The second disc gathers some Sill rarities from different points in her career (1968 and 1973), plus a live video. Rather, the two combine into a genre-less album length cycle that is, quite frankly, one of the greatest singer-songwriter albums ever committed to tape.
