So many books (how can this be a con? I can pick and choose books from the long list of options in the "Book Basket", depending on what is available at my library or what I think will interest my kids. I do not see us ever switching to anything else. I have a friend who compared SL and MFW, and chose SL last fall because she wanted lots of options to create her day. I have always used the book basket as a jumping off point for my library search, so I would get several books that aren't on the list too, but in 9th grade all the reading suggested was half a dozen chapter books for the entire year, most of which my children had already read. I used SL Pre-K (what it used to be called) the first year we homeschooled. When we first began our homeschool journey in 2015, I bought Exploring Countries and Cultures and God's World from A to Z from My Father's World. I might not be qualified to answer this, since I haven't used either, yet, but I have recently spent a number of hours reading forums and reviews on both and comparing both. My daughter does MFW and it seems like a lot of work, to me. Metrodcdoula~ I was able to get my hands on a SL K instructor's guide and I must say, it seemed a tad intimidating. Per subject so it's time-efficient. Thankfully she was patient with my search for other curriculum, and kindly showed me the Kindergarten teacher's manual after I whined about how overwhelmed I was in my search. We all look forward to our bi-weekly Monday afternoon trip to the library, and the boys picked their own books as I pick up the books we will need for the next two weeks. The kids are happy learning, I am happy with the manageability of MFW, as well of the Bible-centered-ness of it. I make up for it with good books from the library, mostly juvenile fiction, and then we discuss, "What did you see in this book that taught you something about -fill in the country name-? I believe they do this because then the resale value goes down rapidly. Also, some of the books in MFW aren't necessarily read aloud; the child looks at the pictures, read the captions together, discuss what you are learning - active learning, not just sitting and listening to Mom's voice for half the day. I want to make sure the kids have a good solid history base but 60 to 90 minutes of history READING each day is a lot more than I was willing to do with more than one child. This was game changer in my process, and has kept me from wasting hours looking for used curriculum. In MFW, you do those subjects with your child and so you will read those with your children. We really enjoyed their science selections and I still purchase science books and supplies from them. The Bible feels tacked on to me.

I don't get to do those lessons. But as a whole, I really love Sonlight. However, quantity does not equal quality. Since beginning MFW life is good. Another program you might want to look at if you haven't already is Heart of Dakota. We had all subjects on the computer and then we did some hands on stuff for science. My kids were frustrated with all the reading aloud I had to do and resented the sitting still they had to do! I'm so stinkin' excited by this idea, I can't wait to get to the older history programs, because I just know that *I'm* going to learn a lot! J know for sure I'm their fiddler curriculum for zach.
