Smug Rory and seemingly sensitive Daniel are not what they appear, and I loved the fact that their sense of almost untouchability due to their upbringing means that what happens to them is beyond their comprehension. The characters who are unlikable are never really redeemed, with perhaps the exception of one. Here was my thoughts as I went along... Fabulously unpleasant characters, and a beating feminist heart. The characters may not have been the most memorable, but I will definitely look for more Katherine Faulkner and I'm curious to know if she will embrace a more domestic or a more suspenseful path. The first consists of Serena's cooler musings on pregnancy and their relationship, which began back in university when she started dating Rory. The story centers mainly around two expectant couples and an interesting lady called Rachel who Helen befriends in antinatal classes. I did have a few questions about what happened but I think if the author has tried to answer everything it would have seemed too perfect. I felt maybe slightly sorry for Helen at times but she also annoyed me with her niavity and clinginess. No, but that for me is testament to Katherine's writing, because the brilliant plot and my absolute need to know what has happened, and why Rachel came into their lives makes this novel one that is impossible to put down. Helen's friend Katie is a journalist who is covering a rape case where two privileged young white men are accused of raping a young woman, and initially I thought it was just part of the narrative to introduce Katie. I am uncomfortably warm. Rachel seems to cling to Helen, cutting her off from the other parents to be at the class.
