After reading a book a short time ago about Mrs. Astor, the mother of Jack I have been highly anticipating reading this book detailing Jack's second wife. Vivid descriptions and lyrical prose, as well as a well-researched story gives readers a feel for the time and setting. I would have thought that her baby would have given her hope and that she was lucky to have been blessed with a part of her dearly departed larger than life husband who was John Jacob Astor IV. There are a few kisses and desires shown before and after marriage. It starts out with Madeleine Astor in the Prologue as what I construed was a journal entry to her infant son she calls Jackey. I thought that it was sort of creepy how the author sets the scene that John Jacob Astor IV noticed Madeleine Force when she was only thirteen years old with his mother in Newport Beach, Rhode Island. This seems likely, but I wasn't entirely convinced. With deep character perspective, the author details how the high-society, fabulously wealthy Astor met, fell in love with and married Madeline Force (29 years his junior). The second mrs astor book. I did have an issue with the POV and style of this book, with the use of first and third person interchangeably. It was heartbreaking to see how Madeleine lost so much, her life changing before it had really ever begun. The story is told from two perspectives: Madeleine as she is relating her history with John Jacob Astor to her newborn son, a few months after the Titanic disaster; and an omniscient narrator who gives a more impersonal, factual perspective. I received an ARC of this e-book from the publisher through NetGalley and appreciate the opportunity to read it. Even with their age difference you can see that these two souls were meant to be and that a love like theirs was a once in a lifetime love. Captain Rostron, a man of honor and steel, was just doing his job. I had to pause at some sentences and reread them because they were so well written or the scene made my heart race! Sadly, they are married only a few months before they book a passage on the Titanic and the rest is history: Mr. Astor's now pregnant wife survives the sinking, Mr. Astor does not.
