As a Malaysian-Chinese reader who rarely ever sees Malaysian representation in the books that I read, I was eager to read this book and find those precious nuggets of familiarity. Natasha Ngan grew up in Malaysia, and does a beautiful job of incorporating her culture and heritage into the book. Paper caste women exist in a state of intersectional oppression. It's a dark book for sure, but it can also be uplifting. After books in order. And this book has some of the best f/f romance EVER! After the events at the ending of book one Lei and Wren escaped the Hidden Palace.
Are we the only ones that love books that make you cry? The King summons Lei again. So it's definitely not a fun book. I wanted to know more about her. General Yu and his men arrive at the village. I kept on waiting for her to rail against the system and fight back but it never really came. Website accessibility.
