Closed loop systems, while initially more expensive, can last for 50 or more years with minimal maintenance. You can also do a pond closed loop or a vertical loop. By contrast, a closed-loop ground source heat pump doesn't demand any particular condition, since it's a self-contained system and the temperature of the Earth's crust is constant everywhere all year round. But that doesn't mean open-loop heat pumps don't have some advantages over closed-loop. The ideal choice for a geothermal heat pump when available land surface is limited. Closed Loop Systems. When a bleed strategy is employed, the effect is to reduce the heat flux on the bore wall, while at the same time drawing-in fresh ambient water as make-up, thus diluting the water temperature in the bore. They require an ample source of ground water because they need to be pumping constantly to provide water to the system. An open loop geothermal system pipes clean ground water directly from a nearby aquifer to an indoor geothermal heat pump. Geothermal systems are most definitely not "one size fits all".
