Sex is a major part of their relationship and Meyerhoff treats it with a refreshing complexity. Thankfully, designer Kate Bunce's set looks more like a circus than a library. Having an actress and animation is a very challenging thing to do because one second of screen time is over an hour in the real time, so for that scene with the vines, we buried Natalia in the ground, covered her in dirt, and the animator comes out, and he's taking these little vines and moving them one frame at a time. The lush, fantastical escape scenes offer a contrast to the sometimes difficult realities of the film. No words are said, as the mother's tender smile conveys that she forgives her daughter for running away from home. I think if I was making a film, I'd want to include some of these fabulous sparkling equines to bring a thrill of the unknown to it. The whole movies seems to be through Davina's artistic lens, and since her art is photography, most things are explained visually. The casting directors from True Grit, the Coen Brothers' film, actually recommended Natalia. The protagonist is a young teen who is caring for a wheelchair-bound mother. Davina (Natalia Dyer) is a dreamy teenager who fantasies about escaping her depressing life at home where she is the sole caretaker for her wheelchair bound mom. As if there's this very vibrant fantasy life living just underneath the surface that's pushing through the pores of reality.
I am aware of some of the controversy, or some people finding it disturbing, or too intense, or too real. Their physical performances are remarkable, as well, in moments of playful roughhousing that suddenly turn violent. And that that's OK. JT: Is the unicorn a useful device to look back on your teenage years, when you get to be an adult, and you attach some sort of mysticism or fairytale likeness to it? Natalia Dyer: I was, yeah, I was really 16. LM: One thing we did with Peter's character Sterling that is his character is this drifter, this punk, so we went to a local punk club [in the East Bay], which I remember from my teenage years, and spent some time with the real kids there. And Peter I met through more traditional casting. I spoke at length with Natalia in advance about how we were going to handle the sex scenes, where her comfort levels were, where mine were. That makes sense to me, because it was an intense situation where she was scared and upset, and you don't see Sterling going after her when she leaves.
