I think I expected the book to make Daphne slightly more interesting as a narrator, and I expected the writing to be extremely bad. This way she can be viewed as desirable, and Simon can avoid the various mothers pushing their daughters at him. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit.
It's brimming with ebullience and I read the whole book with a smile of my face. The sex club situation was kind of icky and I was disappointed. I know it's dangerous to apply our morality to the past, but some things just seem wrong. I downloaded this book on the day of publication and read it within a couple of days, which is always a sign of a good book. Why did the writer enjoy living in a basement 2021. A baffling move from Berkeley that exemplifies his tendency to be idiosyncratic with his finales, but it hampers what is an otherwise faultlessly worked mystery that keeps you guessing until the eleventh hour. I came away with a sense that Simon was a very human being, unconcerned with the formalities & niceties that so stifle & constrain most of our existence & relationships & had an overarching appreciation for beauty & connectedness & aesthetic integrity. I find the moral judgements on Sheringham's behaviour I read in some reviews a bit funny: what happens is not unusual for a Golden Age Mystery. There were a few of uses of bad language. So if you are a British literature professor, who are the only ones who like that kind of crap, go out and buy this book. Of like a Crofts and ends up like a Berkeley writing is awsome, the story is alway engaging and the twist is great too somehow the ending felt a bit of a letdown in the first pass.
I enjoyed this section – Sheringham's authorial "voice" has a tone of mild mockery which makes his depiction of the characters quite amusing. This has an unusual structure for a mystery novel which is successful in parts and rather less so in others. It's difficult to follow, it's not really a biography but a schematic description of Simon Norton... the only things I would remember about this man are 3: genius, asexual, eccentric. A book called Blue Murder, by Harriet Rutland comes to mind. And I would always miss him, too. The world would be less interesting without access to Golden Age books such as these. While discussing it at the book group, Jane mentioned that it was also exploitative, as the subject obviously didn't want to be written about, and it was an invasion of his privacy, which I think is true. Unfortunately, he's not a very charitable biographer. I'm not a fan of the old school hierarchial snobbery we have in education here when they start on about private schools (Norton did go to Ashdown and Eton)... and the name dropping starts, about Boris Johnson, Clegg, Cameron etc etc... and really, it's a mates world, you think, not that these people are any more intelligent than the rest of the country, but that they went to the right schools, therefore they are put into the positions of power.
