Good lord, the memories I have of that sound. I'm guessing valve tap, but holy hell, I've never heard valves make that loud a noise before! Has this happened to anyone else?
Label removed fasteners. That is too bad but as you said you got your $ worth. It seems like it's coming from the valve train, towards the driver side towards the back of the engine bay, almost like something is making contact with the plastic valve/pcv when I removed it that second time I didn't see any areas that looked like something was hitting it. We have heard of engines that got metal into the galleries. Pinging, or pre-detonation from improper tuning or running too hard in extreme, hot conditions, overloads the bearings in many Subaru motors. There was no oil light or notification of low oil. As long as there is a steady supply of clean, fresh oil flowing into the gap between the bearing and journal, everything is fine. When that oil film runs dry, or if the bearing stops spinning due to another problem, the high-speed all these parts spin at means the damage is instantaneous and catastrophic. Some people will add an extra 100-150ml of oil above the full level just for security when they are going to a track day, and don't skimp on cheap oil in a Subaru!
