I loved the way Abby wrote this book. It was a smoke screen to cover her issues (as she mentioned) with how Planned Parenthood made financial decisions. Abby Johnson has a powerful story and I found it very moving. But that wouldn't be much of a book review, would it?
There were a couple side lessons in this book that were also very good. This is hard for me to rate. She even courageously confesses to having two abortions herself. Become a Sustaining Member. She was complaining about women being stuck in the cycle of poverty and forced to bear children and being at risk of unsafe procedures yet when she thought about it again she brushed it off with some religious nonsense about God guiding her, ignored the plight of the women and offered no solutions to women who wanted abortions. She also works on projects for the national 40 Days for Life team.
Abby's decision in the end was more of a moral or natural one due to having seen first hand the horrors of abortion rather than it being a spiritual decision. First this book hardly talked about the issue of abortion as a life experience, merely described a woman stressed from work, have a mental religious breakdown and switch sides. Some people said the writing was terrible, complaining that it wasn't a, and I quote, "literal masterpiece. " It was a hard book to read; not because of the style or the vocabulary.
I understand that God plays a big part in Johnson's life and that God played a big part in this part of her life story. The (only) patient she describes undergoing the late-term abortion to which she really objected is straight out of an anti-choicer's wet dream of a callous, irresponsible slut who just wants that baby sucked out. No type of book, other than Scripture, has moved me as much as the confession. They are filled with compassion and love just like we are for these desperate women. She isn't hateful towards the people at Planned Parenthood. I would recommend everyone read it. Restrictions and cuts to their funding for women's birth control and social services was the reason they had to gain revenue from abortion (as Abby asserts, but it doesn't seem to click in her head as to why this would be). They deserve someone so much better than she could ever be. "Abby's story is powerful but she's also an unbeatable communicator. She is married and a mother of six children. What I don't like about this is being preached to. And then there were none abby johnson space. This book is not very well written, the author's attempts to be seen as sympathetic make her appear weak and easily manipulated and there's plenty of misleading language and embellishment. I could empathize with the fact that she was under a lot of stress to meet demands, but she unjustly accused that Planned Parenthood viewed women as 'dollar signs. It will not leave you wondering what should be done. There's a lot of things I thought I knew at one point that I don't anymore. There is violence--the graphic description of an abortion procedure, but it is necessary in this instance to open the eyes of the blind to what is actually happening--the murder of a baby. And then there were none. It's important to me, always has been, always will be. It is no surprise that this book rates higher with pro-life readers than pro-choice, but what I really appreciated about Abby's point of view was that she humanizes both.
What a wonderful and inspiring book! I understand witnessing this must have been hard for her. It goes into detail of the abortion and how it was done. Both women and children get hurt from it.
