York's conflicts with Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI's wife, were a major cause of unrest in England and undoubtedly contributed to the Wars of the Roses. Henry VI was troubled all his life by recurring bouts of madness, during which the country was ruled by regents. Perhaps the earliest cause was the action of Henry Bolingbroke who, in 1399, took the throne by force, made himself king Henry IV of England (r. 1399-1413) and then murdered his predecessor Richard II of England (r. 1377-1399). Henry VI was also unwise enough to involve himself in the personal disputes amongst his barons, further polarising the kingdom.
Henry was captured at the Battle of Northampton on 10 July 1460, but his wife, Queen Margaret, had managed to escape with their son, Edward, to Scotland, and gathered forces for the Lancastrian cause north of the border. Edward fled, and sought refuge in Flanders. The wars did certainly affect the nobility, though, killing by one way or another half the lords of the 60 noble families of England. In 1455, not long after Henry's initial recovery from his madness, Richard led a force of between 3, 000-7, 000 troops to London, where they met Lancastrian forces at St Albans on 22nd May 1455, which resulted in a decisive Yorkist victory. The losses on the two sides are said to have amounted in all to 1, 100 killed.
Yet again, the barons hovered around a juvenile monarch, jostling for supremacy and the most menacing of all was his uncle Richard. The name of the wars derives from the livery badge of each side, even if they were not so commonly used at the time: the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster. Richard, like Margaret, had an advisor of his own, a man named Neville, known as the Kingmaker. Richard had fought loyally alongside his brother prior to him becoming king and when Edward died unexpectedly, probably of a stroke, in 1483, Richard saw a chance for a dramatic promotion. Furthermore, in terms of convoluted plot twists, reversals, treachery, shifting alliances, military setbacks, and 'surprise' endings, it has few parallels in history. Tragically Henry V died shortly after their son was born so at the age of nine months Henry VI was King of England, and two months later he became King of France when Queen Katherine's father died. Finally, the wars have left their indelible mark on English culture as their twists, turns, and treachery have inspired both historians and fiction writers ever since. At the time, he was the most powerful nobleman in England and had connections that stretched from Scotland to France.
