No one obviously expected this movie to be the next Citizen Kane or anything like that (the ending was even admitted to be a complete rip off of Alien). But the more graphic and sexual nature of it crossed a line for many of the actors, as well as Barbara Peeters, and some audience members. So if you want a cheesy monster movie full of blood and tits, watch Humanoids of the Deep! Dust, dirt and scratches are still present throughout. A shame an additional scene showing Slattery making amends with his savior wasn't shot, or simply wasn't included in the final cut.
All of this graphic, bloody violence coupled with full female nudity made the film legendary around seventh grade and a kind of Holy Grail for those of us unlucky enough to not get to see it. Apparently, producer Roger Corman wasn't pleased with the job director Barbara Peeters did directing the nudity and rape scenes (A female director not down with the exploitation of women? Here is where the film really shines, because if you're going to have a movie about murderous monsters than those scenes damn well better be entertaining. It was a great year for horror but there is one film that people don't talk about very: Humanoids from the Deep. It turns out there's a reason for that. The monsters were designed by Rob Bottin, who doesn't get nearly enough praise, especially when Rick Baker or the guys from KNB are brought up. This material may be protected by copyright law (Title 17 U. S. Code). But the film is shot in such a way as to leave them partially obscured for most of the film, choosing the 'less is more' approach in order to build mystery and tension. I suggest avoiding the 1996 version of HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP and seeking out the nasty 1980 film. That said, this is easily the best this film has ever looked on home video.
That's the basis for a good monster picture, but the execution of it in this film just falls flat. We know that the explosion was caused by an unfortunate chain of accidents (leaking oil-pump, spilled gasoline on the deck, man overboard, something big and cantankerous caught in the salmon net, a flare gun fired at an inopportune moment), but Hank thinks it was sabotage.

A fine gem, this excellent B-movie is one of the most enjoyable little, low budget flicks I've seen in years.
