All the other relationships Tala develops have similar depth to them. The idea of short-life cities is very interesting and there is some very good idea to explain the why and how of everything. The magic system feels defined without being super crunchy. Can Kim Roksu change the course of this story so he can enjoy a long and lavish life free of the soon-to-be hero? No review should overlook that Tala is also a magical phenom and a developing battle maniac. So I've just finished reading this book and have two words to say - mind blown!! It pulls together a mind-boggling number of wry, insightful, creative, challenging, and sometimes dark slice of life moments into a larger structure of mini-arcs that gradually pull readers into the full story plot.

And yes, I definitely got that, but then it veered into heavy Ready Player One territory. She begins her new life at the school to become a magic user, and be friends with Shizuka. Unfortunately the MC is one of the biggest Mary Sues I've ever seen. Fantasy Romance / The Mage Academy of Magic. I related to Maddigan's emotions a lot in this book. Yet, none of this feels like the author lying to us, readers, just to deliver a cheap plot twist, it feels much more like a natural consequence of events and character motivations.
As I said overall I like the book but the beginning had me very confused about the world it was set in and the magic system itself. The non-human world relies on wilder arcane magic, and the difference between the two becomes a key plot element. As you should be, the book has everything you want in a good UF story: a heroine you love at first sight, four very handsome boys and a couple of twists that keep you wondering… "what's next? I'm hoping that will change soon. She feels like a one trick pony to me. As an aside, the fact that human civilization isn't technologically static is a pretty neat part of the world building. This is a light hearted read with heat, so be aware that there is some saucy scenes ahead. What a first crack at this! With two Fire Snake Spells, he would be able to easily deal with the problems he could encounter now. Sigh... And I haven't even got to the other gorgeous boys yet; or Maddigan's discovery of her magic; or the weirdness going on at Twyst Academy and the magic competition from hell.

Once she starts building up offensive capabilities, she begins to punch above her tier too. Tala is a bit easily distracted but definitely quick witted. That speed was hard to discern with the naked eye.
