Thus it kind of limits the relatability to the characters in other facets of their lives. This is my favorite classroom, the only place in school that's ever felt like home. I had blinked back the tears, quickly wiping them off my cheeks with the sleeve of the black tuxedo I'd rented, still watching them dance—like a class A creep—looking away only when it got too painful. Both of our POVs are Black teenagers that come from vastly different backgrounds. This was a stunning debut with what I thought was a perfect ending! However, after being unable to put down Ace of Spades for three days straight, I can confirm that this book is good. Finally, the solution to the mystery is a bit too complicated to be believable. Chiamaka's been Head Prefect three years in a row now; she was the Junior Head Prefect as well as the Sophomore Head Prefect—there's nothing remotely shocking about her selection. It all starts with the contrast between Chi's and Devon's financial situation but shows that beyond the money (which Chi's family has) what comes with generational wealth are influence and power. It was overkill and got be too much. Although it started out similarly to a lot of other books in the genre, by the halfway point it diverged into a completely unique and sinisterly clever story all its own.
Especially when they don't have acknowledge knowledge about a particular experience. Alhumdulillah, I'm glad I did. I was starting to think that I was growing out of young adult books but then Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé went 'no you fucking don't get back here' and I was saved. As regard to her sexuality, this book was shelved by some as lesbian but its really not. It very much felt like she was simply throwing stuff at a wall and hoping something would stick. I received this book for free from Edelweiss, Macmillan INTL in exchange for an honest review.
I cannot wait to see what Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé does next – she's definitely one to watch. Chiamaka is a girl plentiful of secrets and fake friends (whom she needed to get to the top in school). I climb the steps to the first floor, where my music classroom is, burning the depressing memory and tossing its ashes out of my skull. The ending also felt a bit rushed but I could forgive a few hastened conclusions and a few frayed incomplete plot threads for that glorious ending. Mine is red and shiny, with Devon engraved under Senior Prefect. She was a bit of a mean girl and first and did not care how people perceived her, as long as she came out on top.

I've read about five mysteries and thrillers this year so far, which, all things considered, is a lot for me. Chi, the daughter of a Nigerian mother and Italian father, is an assertive young woman who's made it to the top of her elite school's hierarchy. Both are equally as likely to make Black readers feel dismal and hopeless.
It's more open, less lonely. White supremacy is so global. Devon brings so much heart to the story, his great love towards his mother and brothers and his worries of coming out to her and being a disappointment is heartbreaking. You never know who you can really trust, and I think Àbíké-Íyímídé does an excellent job and exposing the more diabolical aspects of a dark academia setting. Devon is much less assertive and much quieter, but his chapters gave us real insight on what it's like to be the odd one out in a school full of rich kids. This book had my heart racing, and i cried so many times! Everyone else in the audience looks just as unbothered by this as Jack. It doesn't just discuss these themes but digs deeper and questions everything and it was compelling and downright chilling. There are no spoilers in this review.
I was a little impressed at how everything still managed to weave together and not feel as though it was lagging behind at any point. This dark and adrenaline-filled thriller tackles several hard-hitting themes that left me reeling; Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé does a masterful job portraying the struggles of black students trying to succeed in a system that only seems to work against them. Which, wow, Àbíké-Íyímídé, you really made a groundbreaking statement with that one. Most mean girl characters never have to directly tell the readers things to the effect of, "People thought X, Y, and I were friends. An incendiary and utterly compelling thriller with a shocking twist that delves deep into the heart of institutionalized racism, from an exceptional new YA voice.
His story is one that broke my heart and soul. The combination of the haunting story and formidable characters make this book absolutely stunning.
