My conclusion of Penzance is that those beholden to it are just a little bit insane. UPDATE--I'm docking it one star because I found it fussy to work with and I started to detect an unpleasant soapy taste. It is best when smoked very slowly so you must put aside a couple of hours for it. Smoking boyz - light wait champ x. The additional thing Penzance brings to the table is being pressed into flake, allowing a unique marriage of the tobaccos rendering an earthiness and smoothness second to none.
Latakia blends in flake form are a rarity, and welcome. Frankly, the mild but complex taste, of all the perfectly blended tobacco varietals, just blew me away. Update - 11 Nov 2015: Meh. The best behaved and easiest English tobacco I've ever smoked. The Virginias are delicious. I did finish my bourbon afterwards reflecting on the incredible bowl I just smoked and how lucky I was to find it. Salt was the only flavor present. I was also thoroughly impressed by how easy it rubbed out and how it packed, and once lit again, WOW! Smoking boyz - light wait champ vallon. I kept reading the great reviews and said to myself, " I'm going to try this again". I think I need to try more of the fruit flavored (cherry? ) Enjoy the sidestream smoke as well. I have not been corrupted by the cost and the scarcity of the blend, this is as unbiased of a review as I can muster. It's a Latakia orgy. A crumble cake / flake hybrid that just looks like a lot of time and thought was put in to it.
Pipe Used: Rattray's, Peterson. Despite it's strong scent, it doesn't seem to linger, fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view. Another winner from esoterica. I liked the flakes (another first for me). As much as the flavours full, it's also quite unique; the Latakia offers more depth than just smokiness alone, it's woody and earthy as well as smoky. As a pipe smoker of more than 30 years, that is saying a lot. Burns smooth and clean, the crumble cake may take some adjusting to learn to pack. This tobacco is good. Canned 1/2 under heat immediately, left one bag sealed. Smoking boys lightweight champ. Holy F, this stuff is good. It was smoky I repeat smoky.
It's amazing, but there are too many blends I can horde without so much effort. Only one word describes this tobacco and that word is DELICIOUS. Penzance was my first experience with cake. I'm not trying to be funny here but I believe one might catch a better buzz by going outside & just breathing some of our good, old polluted air. I would say it is worth acquiring some, I enjoyed the search for this as much as smoking it. Quiet Nights is more full flavored and raw.
It seems the crystals on the tobacco were probably sugar. Is it worthy of all the hype, mystery and over the top high prices? It Had Be Out of Stock For a While ~N~ We Think They Saw They Were Losing To Much Money By Not Selling This Penzance Tobacco. I have nothing bad to say about this tobacco.
The room note is pungent, and won't likely suit non-smokers. Even though I sipped slowly this tobacco experience, I found Penzance to still be too much on the strong side for my liking. The orientals are a one-off hit. I have tried some 60 blends( a relative neophyte, I guess). Beats the Colonel's secret recipe by miles. I don't really know what else to say except this is simply the best tobacco I have ever had. S also a bit hard to keep lit, requiring several matches.
