A History of Violence might have been a mediocre gore fest in the hands of a lesser director, but Cronenberg keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire film and leaves you wondering about not only these characters and this story, but about the world we live in. Opposite him, Maria Bello is a firecracker, the kind of actress who draws the camera's attention. The very end scene, when Tom returns home is excellent, the perfect finish. The belief that we can run from who we are and change without regard for our past is brutally ripped apart. David Cronenberg is one of the most versatile directors working in the business today.
In the scene, Fogarty, his chest blown open by a shotgun, the exposed ends of ribs smoking, nonetheless rises from the floor and aims a handgun at Tom. The movie ends A History of Violence has it's plus points (a good story, some cool over-the-top murder action and some kinky sex) but they're offset by some ham-fisted scripting, flat direction and too many sub-plots that don't come together. Director David Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore have worked together on several films since the 1970s. So I check out what the critics and others are saying and try to give the pros their respect and the benefit of the doubt.

It was as if everything that kept me entertained disappeared and was I wonder how a movie can go from suspenseful and absorbing to seemingly worthless and uneventful. Maria Bello, who plays the onscreen mother of Ashton Holmes in the film, is only 11 years older than he is in real life. But historically, Asian stars have rarely been part of the awards. Please try miss this for your own sake and money. The locations create a sense of foreboding as does the very atmospheric lighting and tight editing. The violent scenes are pretty unexpected and gruesome but they can't give this film a better rating when the majority of the rest of the film is a trainwreck. Another excellent feature. This movie is definately not for kids. After they attack one of the customers and seem ready to kill several of the people inside, Tom jumps to the fore, grabbing a gun from one of the criminals and killing the invaders. Mortensen plays the role close to his chest, he reminds you of the sort that their neighbor will eventually describe as "such a nice quiet guy. Is he in the witness protection program? There are some small holes in the plot, but you won't find yourself thinking about them until long after you leave the theater. Viggo Mortensen bought many props for the diner and the Stall home from his trip in the American Midwest. It was as if there was something else in store, but it wasn't shown. Pads were not used for most of the scene however, and in the shot when Edie is naked on the bed with bruises visible on her back, make-up was used to hide the amount of bruises that Maria Bello received from the scene. One evening, while Tom is working behind the counter at his diner, two thugs come in with rape and robbery on their minds. Ed Harris, William Hurt, and Mario Bello did a great job acting; the others were below average probably due to the inconsistency of how their characters developed. It is sharply calm with a jagged script behind the screen that is slowly ticking along with it which when hits its allotted frame, it explodes emotionally that leave an everlasting impact on you. He maintains an air of mystery throughout the film and although the title of the film gives a lot of clues, you never quite let yourself believe the truth. Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is a quiet family man who has everything he could ever hope for. The people who think this movie is great are the ones who think that's what the "cool" people are saying. Carl Fogarty, (Ed Harris) an intimidating, disfigured gangster who stands out like a sore thumb in the café full of locals makes it clear to Tom that he knows who he really is, and they have unfinished business. There were several parts in this film that just lead you on, and the second you think something big is going to happen....... nothing happens.
The experience of watching this in a crowded theater is exhilarating, as it seems the entire audience is sharing something very, very powerful. And therefore letting others destroy for us. It was like leave it to beaver. The ONLY saving grace in this movie is William Hurts 5 minutes on screen.. By the end, you'll understand why Viggo Mortensen is much more than Aragorn. But the ending is even lamer than War of the Worlds which I had previously thought was the worst ending ever. But when the sheriff leaves Tom and Edie in their darkening living room, the safe world they have created feels lost. The two sex scenes show Edie have sex with Tom and sex with Joey. Heidi Hayes is very wooden and expressionless as Sarah. Be warned, both the sex and the violence are at 100%. I'm sorry, if you think this movie is predictable and boring, then you weren't watching the same movie as I was. Both Viggo and Bello are good enough actors that they are able to give some credibility to their unspeakable dialog, but they cannot save this film.
If you have ever been in that situation, you know--but may not accept, or like yourself for it--you know that you would destroy that man that threatens you. Reviewers are bought and sold man. Tom claims he has no idea who these men are or what they're talking about and is glad when Sheriff Sam Carney (PETER MACNEILL) steps in to encourage the men to move on. Upon returning, it is not clear whether Tom will be welcomed by his family, as his spot at the dinner table is empty, and none of his family members formally address his return. A far cry from the oft-glamorized violence of Hollywood.
