As I'm putting on the pulley, it clunks against the pump casting. That seems mighty light to me. I don't have my manual in front of me, but I found this.... 97 Inch Pounds, for the Coolant Pulley Bolts, sounds right. Just get them tight. Seems as both my books show how to re-build a water pump but no info on installation, sealants (if any), nor torque values.
The Yamaha shop manual does not show the torque value for the 4 water pump housing bolts. Did mine at 15 and sofar so good. I think the 25 is excessive, but I have not put 1 in a vice to see if it will yield it. After some thought, it occurred that one could pull the WP back off and tap the stripped holes with M7-1. 2005 Ranger water pump bolts torque specs. I hadn't done a water pump change on a M10 for quite some time & when I saw 20 lb-ft for the water pump bolts in Haynes my little voice asked "WTF? " I was also wondering if possibly there shouldn't be a section in the FAQ for problems with Haynes? The fine threads more closely match original. On page 7-15, which is a page of specs, it shows the water pump bolt torque to be 17 ft-lbs. Can anyone advise me on torqueing the bolts? Have had gasket trouble before and am trying to be fussy on this reinstall. Keep in mind you are going into an aluminum cover assembly, torque specs per bolt size and all of that go out the window.! Or were they farther away from the radiator, but still cooled OK? I didn't find anything different for later "V" engines. The old bolts had lock washers on them and the new bolts don't. I also consulted this document before renewing my waterpump this spring, but handtightened them strongly by feel in the end (feel for the jerkyness to come up and stop)... PS In my case, the 5/16 bolts on my Gold Seal engine were -to my great surprise- replaced by slightly thicker metric ones in the refurbishing process. I had exactly the same situation as you but for the very early 18g 3 main bearing engine. Water pump mounting bolts. I always put a thin layer of Permatex Ultra Grey on both sides of the water pump gasket.

You have a large MG discounter that can supply you with parts just a few hours away from you. I know it isn't much, so a dab of LocTite Blue is not a bad idea.... I get this from engineers all the time, they are worse at, sitting at desk doesn't count for this, on experience of turning a wrench (OK I know I will get a PM from Mr. Tanner on that comment) Be open minded and heed advice from people who have walked down the path hundreds of times, that you now are embarking for first time.
Do what my brother-n-law does... use a breaker bar in it until the bolt head snaps off, then back off a touch...
