There's a small nod to The Chalk Man included too which just like the aforementioned The A-Team nod had me grinning away at its inclusion. The Taking of Annie Thorne is a dark and sinister thriller that builds the suspense until the dramatic and surprising conclusion. I really can't wait to see what she serves for her next course! I read The Taking of Annie Thorne with a friend, I had heard great things about it and I thought that it would be one that we would both enjoy, however, it fell more than a little short of expectations. This was a great story and a brilliant read, CJ Tudor deserves so much praise for this book. Arnhill is a shadow of its former self. I can say though, do not read in bed, at night! In terms of criticisms. Thriller mixed with a little horror, this story takes the reader down a dark and eerie path; this was just the right amount of scary to spook the reader and to keep them on the edge of their seat.

It's full of atmosphere and mystery, and with the creepy Arnhill pit at the centre of the story, and the cottage, it was hard to read late at night. It reminded me a little of Pet Sematary and the idea that death is not something to be tampered with. C. J. Tudor was born in Salisbury and grew up in Nottingham, and has recently moved to Kent with her partner and young daughter. But The Taking of Annie Thorne is way better than Tudor's debut. Like with the rest of the book, the horror is (mostly) understated but it is a nightmare's nightmare and leaves you with a lingering sense of disquiet that ends The Taking of Annie Throne on an unsettling and unforgettable note. Until that fateful day when she went missing whilst they were exploring the old mine. Wham bars - nice touch.

The Taking of Annie Thorne more than delivers on the promise of The Chalk Man and cements C. Tudor's reputation as one of the finest young genre writers of her generation. Arnhill is a grim bleak pit town where the coal mine is now shut and the whole place screams of deprivation and you get a sense quickly that something bad happened here and is happening again. Out February 21st 2019. Although, he doesn't get much of a welcome as old friends and enemies don't want him there bringing up old histories that could effect their lives. There are a few surprising twist and turns along the way and in Joe with his chequered past and outstanding gambling debts we have a character that is far removed from the normal teacher and now he faces the prospect of deep buried secrets resurfacing putting him in grave danger. The Chalk Man is her first novel. More than that, the mine has been eradicated. But even the rules of reality can't be relied upon. If you have read The Chalk Man (and if not then you definitely should, immediately! ) But the hardest part of all will be returning to that abandoned mine where it all went wrong and his life changed forever, and finally confronting the shocking, horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. It's gory at times (the author does body-horror unnervingly well) but still remains clever. The dialogue volleys and character depictions are delivered with an extra-special kick to give an immediate impression of a person's outlook.

Dolls, creepy kids and horror, equals heebie jeebies!! Praise for this book. An excellent read, and I'd very much like the author to keep writing more please! I got the narrative style and characterisation of a calibre I was expecting, with a plot twist that I couldn't anticipate; this was one of my better reads of last year when you consider the five-star rating I gave it, and how quickly I read it! For the latter imagine Myron Bolitar dropped into the disused coalfields of Nottinghamshire. If I haven't already emphasised enough to you, this is a must read and I can see this book winning awards, it is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy. Very enjoyable read, made even better by the narrator. Is that a problem – not for me personally but I can't speak for others. There just wasn't one character in this book that I actually really loved, and cared about which was a little bit of an odd experience especially when it came to the emotional parts of the story. His gambling addiction led him into depts. It is a horror story alongside early Stephen King and I can easily visualize it as a film. I liked him from the first page.

The story has a dark and eerie atmosphere. Tudor also demonstrates an enviable ability to blend nostalgia and horror together in a toxic soup, haunting her protagonists with the actions of their youth. Two days later she turned up again but she wasn't the same. The events at Arnhill give him a chance to run away from his gambling debts, and hide while he tries to sort out his life. CJ Tudor is a brilliant storyteller. I received a copy through Netgalley, courtesy of the publisher, for which my thanks. I enjoyed myself immensely and this book is a 5 star read.

She is definitely well on her way to being a British literary superstar. His CV is a little creative to say the least but he's quite charming and manages to secure the post. This was a fabulous read.
