There are a lot of wonderful book couples out there but the thing that made me just LOVE this book was how fuctional Gideon and Eva were. Gideon put the moves on Eva immediately after the first time he saw her, before he'd had a glimpse of her mind or her heart. As obnoxious as Gideon is, Eva is just as much, and she's struggling to deal with the insecurities her fucked up past have bred into her even as she can't keep herself from lashing out rather than expressing herself. Bared to You is narrated in first person by Eva Tramell, a recent graduate who has just moved to New York to begin work as an assistant to an ad agency executive. Minus 1/2- star for reminding me entirely too much of Fifty Shades of Grey, and inducing me to scan thru some parts. It's a rather strange hybrid between female-focused sex acts and the sort of cliché-ridden over-explicit dialogue that people who learn from porn-sites call 'dirty talk'. An ever-present materialism thrums like drone through the whole novel and is eerily reminiscent of Bret Easton Ellis's psychopaths obsession with brand names. The biggest thing this subgenre had going for it, and the reason I was sure it would eventually go the way of other "of the moment" books, was that they are all being written by unknown first-time authors. I never felt that the book explained what made Eva so different in Gideon's eyes or why he had an immediate obsession with her. Can you tell I'm frustrated with this!? I would've loved to see more of those issues come to some sort of climax in this book, before the series reaches its final culmination in the next book.
