There are so many similarities that it chills your blood. "' exploration of brotherhood, grief, friendship, and familial ties is as moving and relevant as its exploration of racism. However, while there are still a few things that need to be tidied up, we get a sense of "moving on" for everyone, even Tyler. Evaluates self-identity in African Americans, police brutality, stereotypes, prejudice, social justice, education, poverty and more. Every once in awhile the hype (generally in addition to an audiobook from the library) convinces me to read a book, and that's what happened with Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles, but I'm glad it did. No matter which you prefer, focus on what's important here--and that is the black lives matter movement, and the validity, and importance of black lives in general. While other police brutality-centered novels spark discussions about the topic, Tyler Johnson Was Here bluntly depicts the effects of the unjust, murderous acts committed by those meant to protect citizens. The talk Tyler and Marvin's mother has with her boys in this book, about keeping their heads down, about watching out for the police, is one my parents never had to have with my sisters or with me, and I realize how privileged we are for this. "Coles's contemporary novel addresses real issues facing black teens in the U. S. today, and is a powerful story full of heart, packing a deep emotional punch. Yes, I'm willing to die for this cause, but the fact that there's even a chance that I'll die, become a hashtag, be remembered briefly, and then be completely forgotten and marked as a statistic fucking terrifies me. And I will more likely than not be pushing this on everyone I meet once I have done so. I don't think the story needed a stronger focus on the trial, because the outcome wasn't what was most important to Marvin in the end.
This was such a horrifically emotional read. There are moments where this book feels like a debut - missed opportunities, and underdeveloped characters - but overall, it's definitely worth a read. I also found it was a little simplistic to make the majority of white people out to be racists and inherently bad (not just the police, but also the MIT rep, who makes it clear Tyler could only get into the school to fill a diversity quota). There's a lot left open at the end of this book, but that works very well for it, because it shows better, and more implicitly, how much work needs to be done to right the wrongs done by racism to this society. I do think you'd like them both equally, and seriously don't make THUG the only BLM book you read. "— Publishers Weekly. This story emphasizes the importance of remembering the victims as humans, not martyrs or thugs. As a result, the second half of the story feels somewhat rushed. That's nothing to sneeze at, and I can appreciate the value of books like TYLER JOHNSON WAS HERE even if I don't enjoy them. And maybe I shouldn't have read this while also reading The Color Purple and maybe I shouldn't have hoped this would be Angie Thomas- or Jason Reynolds-level great. I would have loved if these little details were not left hanging.
It was interesting to learn about Tyler through his brother's eyes. G-mo and Ivy felt like one-note characters, normally talking about girls or their favorite TV show when with Marvin. FYI (since a few reviewers 'conveniently' turned off their reading comprehension after reading a few pieces of dialogue to justify vitriol against this book, even though the dialogue in question was challenged immediately after... lmao): A distinct message in this book is that racism and racist rhetoric can be perpetuated by people of any race. Coles also makes use of a vast number of metaphors and similes, which felt too much at times, but overuse of these is also a bit of a pet peeve for me, so this could simply be a personal issue. That's exactly how I felt with this book. We don't have much of a trial scene in this book, we just have Marvin and his mother going to a deposition to listen to the witness who shot video of Tyler being murdered. Tyler Johnson Was Here is amazing book and definitely one of my favorite reads of the year! All of his friends are very one-note, and his sort-of love interest, when she appears, kind of just feels like the generic manic pixie dreamgirl type. I wanted to stop reading every five seconds simply because I couldn't stop wanting to cry. The author attempts to sprinkle light-hearted moments throughout the novel, but the jokes fall flat, especially when they revolve around male genitalia and sexuality. We meet a lot of characters in this story. Tyler now prefers his friends over all else, forsaking academics and his curfew.
Jay Coles is a voice we need in YA today, and you bet your ass I am going to read this book. First of all, this is not going to be a proper review. I love, love, love that Marvin Johnson is a teenage boy who is allowed to feel and express emotions like grief, anger, despair, fear, and first love. Perhaps it's true, and the flood of outrage, grief, and protesting isn't falling on deaf ears, and so the Tyler Johnsons of real life can finally rest in peace. No, Tyler Johnson Was Here isn't a literary masterpiece—it's very YA, and it's as subtle as a brick (an observation which Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie decries in Americanah, because not all black-voices literature has to be subtle to be powerful)—but its merits lie elsewhere. I enjoyed that this book was through Marvin's point of view because it gave the story a really emotional, realistic feeling, but I wish there was a little more backstory. People should not have to be excellent in order to not get killed by the people who were supposed to protect them. I loved all the references to past television show A Different World. And, to really solidify this, there are three badass black women in this novel. This book is the truth of so many black people out there who became a hashtag for two days and then are forgotten and never get justice. I struggled with this rating, but honestly, a good intent doesn't mean a thing if I cannot get into your book.
Both are poignant takes on real-life issues and both should be read. This family's struggle to find resolve, peace, and even a twinge of justice is full of life lessons, including this gem inspired by Auntie Nicola, a former cop: "Life is about wading in the rain, in all the storm's fury…becoming one and the same with the storm—getting angry, getting heated, and being the change you want. " Please do not feel offended by anything that I have written. The story is told from the POV of Tyler's twin brother, Marvin. Christine M, Librarian. Whatever Jay Coles writes next, you'll be damned sure I'm reading it as soon as possible. Jay Coles strips away barriers, forcing you to see, feel, hear the pain of loss and to comprehend how utterly senseless violence is. Of course the topic makes it hard not to compare to The Hate You Give, and while the writing and the pacing means it doesn't quite reach that level of success to me, if you're looking for a book to read next after THUG, I'm definitely recommend Tyler Johnson Was Here. Please allow this novel to stand on it's own two feet--because it's strong enough do so--despite it's flaws. That much is in the blurb that's been known about the book for months, but what's a little surprising is that this horrific act actually doesn't catalyze the events of the book from the beginning. Police brutality, racial profiling, lack of justice for murdered black people by the white police officers... Marvin's story is important and needs to be heard, Tyler's story is important and needs to be heard, like many other similar cases...
Genre: YA Contemporary (stand-alone). I cried when Tyler went missing. They drift apart and find new friends, but their friendship keeps asserting itself at parties, shared holiday gatherings and random encounters. Marvin is a precious little cinnamon roll of a protagonist. He is our narrator and he's just a regular teenager in Alabama.
You really feel for their mother. Warning: This is not a political review by any means. He says that it's because he wants to help their mother out more around the house, but I think, that he was doing it because he wanted to feel safe or feel that he could protect himself if the time came down to it with another encounter. The characters in here feel very undeveloped. There were many parts in the book where the book didn't fully come together, some parts seemed a little unnecessary or too long.
Marvin's love interest, Faith, falls subject to the same missteps, though her personality is developed a bit more. There is a throw away line about G-mo's father being deported and that stopped me in my tracks. 5 Although this book was extremely enjoyable and fast paced, it felt a little disjointed and too fast paced for me. So many reviews talk about how much better THUG was in comparison to this book, because it was more fleshed out--and had better writing.
I was incredibly frustrated when he started pushing them away, but I am glad they remained loyal to him throughout the book. Marvin's a rather distinct teen who's self-aware, full of self and cultural love/confidence. This is very similar to the The hate you give by Angie Thomas. The depiction of the way the police treat him and his friends is frightening. I am literally taking the heaviest of sighs, because I read a review that called the romance insta-lovey, and they totally missed the mark here. Marvin's mom lacked characterization for me, so did Ivy and G-mo (and they were Marvin's best friends so I expected a bit more), plus the chemistry in a certain relationship in the book felt nonexistent and/or not convincing enough for me. That a good man is hard to find because the strong ones usually turn bad.
Side character Ivy is biracial and likes girls. Let's start with Marvin. Have you guys read this book yet? Jay Coles delivers the first book in what will be an illuminating career. Ivy, G-mo and Marvin's friendship is beautiful, they are supportive and caring and I love reading about the three of them.
