Likewise, today's band happens to be one of those that pioneered the so-called 'Egypt death' theme and incorporated it into their music early on in their career (and it surprisingly really stuck and held up). The production of the album does sound a little bit flat, there isn't great quantities of low end and it goes for your throat with a full on treble and mid range fury. The album itself has incredible instrument work and there are some quality tracks on this album. The opener is perfect, fast as hell with wild riffs, but it's got those freaky additions at times, like the summoning of Anubis and friends. Karl Sanders was a shy, chubby kid from South Carolina whose growing waistline was keeping pace with his expanding intellect. Even though the songs challenge the band and the listener, they still click in right away and don't take 10 listens to get, mostly thanks to short lived but very well placed head banging chugs and double bass runs mixed with the more complicated dynamics. And like all great works of art, this record leaves a great deal to the listener to weed through. If you start to get itching hands every time you hear something faster and more technical that you heard before, you'll be blown away just like I was. The improved production values, compared to the two preceding studio albums, only further strengthens my positive feelings toward the album. The vocals are very well done as well, with the new vocalist Jon Vessano fitting right in with no problems- I couldn't picture Nile using a different vocal style. The solos and riffs are endless, as are the stellar vocals and melodies. Stylistically the material on "In Their Darkened Shrines" is a further development of the brutal technical death metal with ancient Egypt lyrical themes also found on "Black Seeds of Vengeance (2000)". There are no bad tracks whatsoever, although "Sarcophagus, " "Wind Of Horus, " "Kheftiu Asar Butchiu, " "Unas Slayer Of The Gods, " and "Hall Of Saurian Entombment" (the first part of "In Their Darkened Shrines") are my personal favorites.
