I enjoyed him more than Chiamaka but the character was weighed down by having all the issues thrown at him like being poor with a dad in jail, having a single mother with multiple kids she was struggling to raise, having a drug dealing friend in addition to being a young gay boy struggling with his sexuality. Mine is red and shiny, with Devon engraved under Senior Prefect. It's their senior year. Ace of Spades has plenty of promise, but this debut title fails to deliver. I tried to empathize with the characters as much as I could and it distressed me that black people every where still have to go through stuff like this every day…it's become a norm for them.

Entirely selfish I know, but I would have loved it if Faridah would have expanded more on the ending and its time jumping epilogue, if only so I could have spent more time with the in-depth characters she created. I don't usually allow myself to dream that much—disappointment is painful, and I like to control the things that seem more possible than not. The characters both main and side were just *chef kisses* très magnifique! Devon comes across as an "average" teenage boy, concerned with getting good grades, applying to colleges, and supporting his mother. Seriously, though—how did social media not play a bigger role in this?? Despite Chi's empowered nature, her inability to realize that race can act as a barrier makes her vulnerable. Peeling back the layers of insidiousness present in this book invoked physical reactions in me, especially once we reached the truly rotten core.
I liked Chiamaka, but I fell in love with Devon. While for some of his classmates queerness doesn't negatively impact their lives because it is intuitively accepted by most (let's say a white guy who's into theater), he is seen as an oddity in the eyes of these same people as if Black boys can't be gay. "Devon, welcome back and congrats on becoming a prefect! " The microphone screeches loudly, forcing my head up. "You can get started on your senior project, along with the rest of the class. "Ah, there seems to be some kind of technical malfunction..., " Mrs. Blackburn, my old French teacher, announces from the back. I honestly, however, didn't like either of the characters at all. Overall I definitely love the theme of the book, but the author could have made a better attempt on writing the storyline. Most mean girl characters never have to directly tell the readers things to the effect of, "People thought X, Y, and I were friends. It isn't long before Chiamaka and Devon discover the conspiracy isn't as simple as locating one random bully. I also liked how the story explores how class adds another layer of privilege, and this is exemplified in how Chiamaka, who grew up and lives in a rich neighbourhood and how it insulates her, versus Devon, from a poorer neighbourhood, differently navigate and perceive society and the spaces that they occupy. We were mutually using each other to climb to the top. I almost stayed up all night to do that but as a burgeoning old woman, I lost the battle to sleep. The only two black students. To completely not mention something that is such a huge part of the book is frustrating, and so I'm writing this up more as an FYI, than a thorough and in-depth review. I felt like I was holding my breath, getting ready for what would come next… only to be gasping out loud when I realized what was actually happening. He lives in a tough neighborhood and runs drugs to help out with money. I start to zone out. Faridah keeps the book firmly grounded in YA territory and refreshingly current through her examination of subjects that teens are facing at this very moment such as homophobia, classism and toxic relationships, to name a few. It's more open, less lonely. And the added social commentary especially those parts that focus on racism, classicism, white privilege, and more take this book to another level.
