Humanoids From The Deep is a fairly entertaining relic of the pre-CGI 1980s where the monsters are actors who had to suffer for long hours in 100 pound suits in terrible weather conditions for our entertainment. Worrying about the performances, which are not of the highest caliber, is not all that important. That's the extra level of ickiness not featured in your standard Sea Monster Horror movies.
Story: The concept is based on a true story concerning an exotic species of eels that are released in the southeast from Asia. The proposition here is that mutated fish - mutated into humanoid lifeforms due to experimental growth hormones by meddling humans - would hunt down and rape female humans in order to propagate the new species. As if that wasn't enough, people's dogs are being killed, which also, yes, leads to still more tensions with the Indians, who are blamed. Just as bothersome, several locals are attacked, killed or raped by slimy fishmen and right before the annual Salmon Festival, too! This is where Humanoids from the Deep begins to differ from its predecessors, and as with the monsters that are its subject, its evolution is untempered. Far from it, the creatures thrive as bloodthirtsy killers, threatening to annihilate a small coastal town by slaughtering the men and abducting the women for mating! Style: bloody, scary, humorous, melancholic, bad ending... Executive producer Roger Corman deemed Peeter's version of the film lacking in the required exploitation elements needed to satisfy the movie's intended audience. Critical reviews were far from laudatory. The way the film uses the Humanoids, dialing back their stalking of pretty girls and murdering the men, changing them from the rampage and rape nightmares they were to creatures that instead of satisfying their desires on the spot, store victims in a slimy hive to perhaps be used off camera and changing the climax from hand-to-webbed-hand combat with the townspeople to just being blown up by the military, strips them and the movie of any creepiness or dread. In-between, it's on the slow side, with minimal tension, but it's impressive that there were only 3 monster suits, yet it's conveyed that there is a multitude of these creepy beasts.
It's up to the townsfolk and a visiting biologist to fight back and fend them off. Doug McClure, as usual in his films, is a reasonable leading man but nothing more, getting the job done but not projecting much charisma.
