The Homesman has been rated R by the MPAA for violence, sexual content, some disturbing behavior and nudity. Heroism as traditionally defined is practiced by women here, though it goes unrewarded to say the least. The men are helpless bystanders or ambiguous allies. Then when I saw that the story was falling apart in my hands, I took up skimming the book, which is how I saved my sanity. Don't be fooled into expecting "Good night, John-Boy, " though. Tommy Lee Jones, as a director, homes in on the surreal aspects of the story with beautiful sensitivity and strangeness ("The Homesman" is an extremely strange film), highlighting the monotony of the landscape in which figures are either dwarfed by the vastness of it or tower above the flat horizon. The author's prose flows smoothly, but with a dangerous undercurrent.
