🌟 I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I have grown so close to Jamie and Charlotte. I've been having a ton of trouble sleeping the last several months. Even if at times I'm all "dang girl, you broke into his room to sleep on his floor and threw his phone out the window? " Nothing bad at all, actually. I like Jamie quite a bit, and it's fascinating to see what a very young, modern Watson might look like. If you want to know the truth I did get bored of the novel halfway through of it- because it did not have the witty-ness of the first novel. The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. And then the plot all of those random family members, add an art forgery set up, several party scenes with quirky Europeans and shake. Flashback three years earlier to the Jefferson planing mill where a man named Byron Bunch works; Byron will become one of the main characters — and a primary narrator — in the novel. I also liked that Milo played a larger role in this, and so did Leander, Charlotte's uncle as well as Jamie's dad. The forgery subplot, parodied-but-still-pretentious art scene, dark humor, witty dialogue, and action scenes thankfully leaven the relentless relationship drama. Plus, Charlotte was (of course) also withholding information from Jamie, so he seemed to spend most of the book moping around feeling uncertain and unnecessary. Oftentimes Hightower's wife leaves Jefferson supposedly to visit her family, but one day a woman from Jefferson who is in Memphis shopping sees Mrs. The Last of August: Charlotte Holmes, Book 2 Book Review. He needs to figure out what his place is without comparing himself to his grandfather and I think he started to do that in the end but then Holmes messed everything up. What people want from you, and what you are, underneath it all. I just wish we'd have gotten to the meat of the story earlier, but it wasn't bad in any way. Obviously, Jamie and Charlotte aren't going to sit back and wait for something to happen. I am, happily, just as intrigued by the Moriarty family as I am by the Watson and Holmes families; the parallels between Holmes and Moriarty (the originals) have often been noted, but this novel basks in them, bringing them to the forefront. When you have so little say in it all, I think it's important to exercise a measure of control when given the opportunity. I also really liked that the mystery revolved around art forgery because I thought that was really unique as well and it was super interesting.
Yay for gender equality - why shouldn't women be the pushers-away? It's like there's a wall around some of the characters and the plot and everything, and that wall blocks me from being able to see everything that's going on and how it all connects. Watson isn't a typical knight in shining armor, he's got his own demons to contend with. Jamie's narration is always a delight to read, but I especially love the few chapters we get from Charlotte's weirdly amusing point of view.
But the thing is, they are always fighting to be better. It shouldn't be a surprise that my least favorite trope is a love triangle and the one in this book just really took the story down a notch.
