You've not compromised the safety of the axle either, you've just made the thing function right. Drove it for several miles at 65 mph, took several U-Turns, did some in reverse…seems to be on there for good! Is it normal for these to slip out after installation?
Anybody know if the circlips are available by themselves? It's kind of egg shaped now. Something in the differential part of the transaxle assembly is out of whack. I've been working on this car for a little over 4 months and I'm so close to being done but I can't get this damn axle in. A clip will have to be in place. It might be hitting splines at this point.
It can be off a spline or two or does it have to be exact? Since this isn't a friction surface I decided to de-burr it with a Dremel. Cleaned up very nicely. You just have to pop it back in after the splines line up. I have just finished putting in a new left side axle seal. With the subframe removed I was certain I had enough room to cut the CV shaft on the passenger side and push it through the oil pan. This may make it difficult or impossible to reinstall the orginal axle without some spline grinding and possible weakening of the splines. There's no gasket, so black RTV it is. Autozone actually recommended i do that. It came out so easy. The cup from the axle is fully seated in the back of the hub. I'm the owner of a 1996 automatic shift Honda Accord. The snap ring is a simple bent spring steel you are correct in assuming you can bend it just right to make it work the problem is doing without reference. Passenger side CV axle won't go in. Problem with this is that since only the very end of the axle spline is engaged in the tranny, the spines may develop a slight twist because of the force of acceleration. I have lubricated it very well using white lithium grease then tried Red Line synthetic back to white lithium. Also you can hit the axle in with a mini sledge hammer with a piece of wood between it if it's still being stubborn or put the axle nut on and put the socket over it and hit that. Passenger side went it without any problems and is ready to go. I've tried turning both the axle and the diff to see if it had to be realigned and it didn't help. I didn't have enough clearance for air tools. It can be one side because you do not have a limited slip differential.
I suppose I'll try this…I'll check back with (hopefully) a successful report on how things go. Have a small lift on it which is pushing the bottom of the strut into the dampener on the axle, but the rest went in fine so doesn't seem to be the issue. The other side should rotate. Hydraulics are awesome! I often pick up my rubber mallet and smack to get it to jump in. Spines should line up and travel a certain distance until the circlip causes interference - is this your problem? It of course as you said can't come out a the way but there are a couple problems: 1) sealing surface on the CV compromised will allow dif fluid out and dirt in if the cv isn't in all the way. Is there something I am missing here? When you tried to put the trans in "P" and you heard the grinding, that was the output shafts of the trans still turning because there was nothing stopping it meaning that the cv joint/s have come off the splines of the output shaft/s. Cv axle won't go in. If it does move the snap ring is not seated in the differential gears. If you did the other side you can probably steal the snap ring from the other old one. In several cases I've run across in which a half shaft job or brake job was performed, the nuts not tightened properly, and shortly thereafter the halfshaft splines would strip the splines out of the wheel hub. Neither axle maybe engaged all the way in the spine, but only one has slipped out. Happened to a friend of mine in a U-turn.
