I filled the gear case with new lube and did not notice any water coming out of the top vent hole in the LU when filling. You may also notice very narrow, reddish-purple lines on your nails. I had to file down the teeth to get everything to line up properly again. If water was present I'd be digging a little further in to the problem. Here is a pic of the gear lube that I drained. Went back and reread your post because it seemed as though two symptoms were convoluted together. When a gear case goes, it just goes. It will be easier to put it back in place with everything in sync if nothing has moved. I gave up mud motors. But when I put the grease zert back in I still can't get it to take grease into the houseing. Even though the shaft is stainless.
In November we took it on a 20-minute spin before putting it on the trailer to bring it down to Houston. Water in Outboard Gear Oil, Maybe. This keeps the important metal parts submerged in lube. And a picture would help as to where and how it's handled. I dont know if it would be helpful, but the motor is a 1989 Johnson GT150 outboard. The color of your nail may also change. I probably should mention that the engine was mounted vertically at the time. They have their regular gear oil. So, what could I have damaged? Since this motor ('88 Yamaha 90HP) is pretty old, should I have them do a compression test before they start on the LU? Mostly likely something is plugging it. Best 13 Picture Of Bad Lower Unit Oil.
