Two soldiers grab a young girl, about 13 years old, by the hair and drag her into a building. Despite the great risk to themselves and their young son (played first by Timothy Radford and later by Val Maloku), the Zabinskis become part of a network of determined rescuers. Yet, somehow the zoo remains open and ready for business - though that business may involve a slightly different purpose from the usual critter rescue. Book and Movie are *very* different-skip the movie please. Maybe these human-animal relationship are all the stronger because of how scary and uncertain everything is during wartime; it makes you look at things differently and appreciate what you have, even if that is just a hamster. What does he do to try to protect the youngest prisoners? In addition to the violent and scary scenes mentioned, The Zookeeper's Wife has some scenes that could scare or disturb children in this age group. I made it through, somehow. Soldiers cheer them on. First the zoo sustains major damages during a bombing raid, and then German soldiers take over the compound and use it as an armory. Don't bother with the movie. Its a great story for adults.
There's so many terrible moments from the war that without the lightness a young badger's first stumbles and and an exuberant rabbit's tendency to steal food, I would have had a difficult time finishing such a truly exhaustive novel. Jan reluctantly lifts them up onto the train. For example: - The scenes showing the death of the animals are very upsetting. Everyone else in The Zookeeper's Wife, meanwhile, feels somewhat paint-by-numbers, including both Jan and the Jewish men, women, and children to whom the Zabinskis offer sanctuary. Also, the author's priorities were just weird. It's really a lack of fluidity that was at issue. Some of the violent portrayals shown here feel like those typically found in stories from this time in history. To be blunt -- and I'm sure I'll go to hell for saying this -- I thought she'd be a bit hotter. The Zabinskis' tale also gives us a look at details of how Warsaw coped with the occupation, finding ways into and out of the ghetto once it was shut in, the subterfuges they engaged in to get fake identification papers, how they got information on what was happening in the ghetto, finding sources for food for the animals remaining at the zoo.
Despite the incredibly high stakes, Antonina manages her villa - chock full of her family, "guests, " and of course, many, many delightful animals. The Żabiński family isn't only made up of husband, wife, and son. Ackerman has unveiled another great moment in the histories of human kindness during times of war, and we are the richer for it. THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE tells the true story of a couple who owned a zoo in Warsaw, Poland during World War II. A man caresses a married woman's hair and face and washes her hands and arms in one scene. Sexual content features some breast nudity (in a non-sexual context), passionate kissing and undressing (married and unmarried couples), and scenes where a woman uses her sex-appeal to manipulate a man. How could a book that had so much potential for an incredible story let the reader down so much? It takes only a moment. Needless to say, the author covers the gamut in subject matter. People are starving and there are dead bodies on the street. The Zabinskis have Jewish friends, Magda (Efrat Dor) and Iddo (Maurycy Fraenkel), and agree to hide Magda in the basement of their home when Iddo is sent to the ghetto.
Zookeepers Jan and his wife Antonina had been dedicated to a special zoo even before the War... not wanting the animals to be just a viewing in cages. He offers to take the prize animals to his zoos in Berlin and Munich to save them. 'Why do we humanize animals and animalize humans? I went into this expecting to love it, considering the premise is just SO good. Bloody caresses of animals and corpses of people are shown. For example, characters smoke and drink throughout. A husband and his wife argue about another man touching her. The Germans decide to relocate the fur farm to Germany and kick everyone off of the zoo property. It's the type of non-fiction which reads like fiction! OK, so Polish experience of WW II is my issue, and perhaps I am nit picking, but I am not making boatloads of money off this book – and when I write my own books, my editors and I make darn sure that the facts are correct. Although this is a non-fiction account, it would be easy to forget that, and experience reading it as if it were a novel. Thankfully it also offers the reminder that there are always bold souls who will brave the fray and fight for what's right. Only one of them, Urszula (Shira Haas), has texture and complexity, and even then, we still don't really get to know her story. The story of Antonina Zabinski and her husband Jan, and the assistance they provided to Jews hiding from the Nazis during the war, is certainly worth telling, but it may have made a better long magazine article than a full-length book. At one point, the author talks about how the days were constantly cloudy from all the shelling but doesn't tell where or why there is shelling, given that Poland had already surrendered.
In the middle of the party, as a woman is ridiculing Antonina, they're told the elephants just birthed a baby that's not breathing. Meanwhile, Jews will be hidden under the refuse they gather. Even so, it's worth watching for mature viewers who can put up with the violence and brief nudity. But Jan and Antonina begin hiding Jews in their home and on the grounds of the zoo, even in animal cages and habitats. Still, the most influential person in Hollywood is you.
