From Shanghai to Vancouver, the women in this collection haunt and are haunted. I read this book in one sitting and couldn't put this down. The result, he promises, is "the greatest Canada-based literary thrill ride of your lifetime". Her fiancé has been abducted in another country, and there's no news of him. I thought this was going to be totally a predictable story but the twists made me love the story and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Rory leases an old building to open an art gallery. Now, World War 2 does play a part in the story but it is not the main background for the story. Who doesn't wish for a wedding that everyone says "Aww and they lived happily ever after"? There are layers in this novel, that become like puzzle pieces that have to be fit together to complete this story. I thought the story was well told and written. This was my free Amazon First Reads selection for Sept and my mind must have been on a different planet when I chose this one, or it was totally mis-described, because this is NOT the kind of book I would normally choose. I found the story different from other historical fictions set in the same time period as there were no details of concentration camps although the author did make mention of significant milestones such as Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass. They are both stronger than they think and their friendship makes them even stronger and helps handle some sad and also some happy events.
