And I just kind of think, like, I read a lot of Tana French and I think she does that so well. And that must have been so much fun to weave those in. And so, you know, I kind of really like to write about parenthood, and I find it very interesting, and I think that added that kind of loadedness to the narrative of you're going back and you're finding things that you thought were lost forever. I must admit that I did not quite know what to expect when I decided to check out Wrong Place Wrong Time. The plot wasn't terribly complex, but reading the book was like peeling an onion layer by layer. A Book Club is always a good way to bond with those people who share your love of books, but occasionally the group needs a little prompting on discussion topics to get the conversation flowing. April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. But I think also that applies to seeing a younger Todd. And I had a privileged experience with the pandemic because I wasn't ill from it and nobody I know got seriously ill and I worked from home anyway.

And I think it would have been quite easy to make Todd quite sullen and secretive and it be kind of a different kind of vibe with the mother kind of trying to work out why he's become that way. I have just finished this book and feel like my head has been on a fast spin dry because WOW this is one very clever, very original headf*ck. And - you can't believe what you see - your funny, happy teenage boy stabs this stranger. Does she need to sacrifice something for her son, pay more attention, meet different people? But it's much more than that; the love Jen has for her son and her husband is beautiful. Surely, stop the crime, stop the time loop. And there's no more like that large in childhood because children change so much. And what would one have to fix to prevent it? McAllister uses the central conceit of Wrong Place, Wrong Time brilliantly. Why do you think the title is Wrong Place, Wrong Time? Tell me in the comments. And I think probably I write these things in order to make sense of those things rather than sort of by accident.
And I also just finished The It Girl by Ruth Ware and The Family Remains by Lisa Jewell. And I thought that was so interesting because we don't really think about that day to day, and you're only interacting with everybody's present person, of course. 29:23] Cindy: I think that's exactly right. I have no trauma from it. This book throws up so many questions. 41:28] Cindy: And the other thing I have found about it is with the 16-year-old son, is that something that they do together socially. Moment that comes from nowhere.
Original, engrossing and full of uncertainty, I was completely drawn into this story. 24:28] Cindy: Well, I was also wondering as I was reading how the book would end, and obviously we're not going to talk about the ending in terms of spoiling it, but did you always know how it was going to end, or was that something that you had to work through as you wrote? But I've since had a nightmare with my next book. That I think it can stagnate with. As I'm not a huge fan of time travel books and tend to steer away from fantasy/sci-fi, I would never have picked this up if it had been written by anyone else, but because all of Gillian's books have that clever moral dilemma that I find fascinating I knew I had to read it. So, like, it's a sliding doors novel. It's also problem solving, and I sort of feel like there's a bit of snobbery about it, and there need to be. I think it's a form of therapy, I think, for writers. She's broke and alone, and she's just left her job under less than ideal circumstances.
But the other thing that Jen realizes as she goes back in time. 38:51] Cindy: And the Interior Book Designer, that's the episode that I've had so much feedback about because I think, one, so many people had no idea that was even a job. It's every parent's nightmare. Believing that the only chance she might have to stop her jumps into the past and save her son's future is to figure out why Todd stabbed the man, Jen begins to investigate the crime in reverse, perusing her son's movements in the weeks and months leading up to the crime and trying to decide how he knew the murder victim and why he felt that he needed to kill him.
Why did Kelly hide the truth from Jen all this time? And a lot of times it's not something you could have predicted, which I think is better, but it's also not out of left field, so I don't know how to explain that any better other than to say it makes perfect sense when you read it and you look back and think, oh, wow. 05:29] Gillian: Yeah, I do plan and I did plan this novel and I think the reason why it was sort of relatively easy going to write was because I did have a meticulous timeline. While listening to my podcast, you will hear author interviews, youth, behind the scenes conversations about various aspects of the publishing world, theme discussions with other book lovers and more. But these are just regular people living their lives, doing the best they can. He was an incredibly interesting addition to the story because throughout his first chapters, he's seemingly only loosely connected and I immediately began trying to figure out what role he would play in the story, as surely with his own POV, there was more to be revealed there. Connect with the Author…. 05:09] Cindy: Well, I was just fascinated by your writing process with this one and what that was going to look like because it was so much fun to read it as she goes further, further back in time. It was nice to see her with some flaws but nothing that would turn me off to her character, and I also got to see her work on those flaws and contemplate things she would (and did) change by having this second chance to relive some of these days. As you watch from the window, he emerges, and you realize he isn't alone: he's walking toward a man, and he's armed. Did it really make you reevaluate things in your life or did it make you really think a lot about what it would have been like to go back and revisit earlier stages of your life as you were writing because you were so focused on that topic as you wrote? Jen's own disbelief about the time loop situation vocalises all your doubts, so it all feels quite genuine. I thought the conceit was so sort of large that it would have been interesting regardless.
And you can only hope that my readers also like the things I like. This secondary storyline, which is progressing in a normal linear way, intersects with the main storyline is some brilliant ways, and it provides some intriguing and powerful context to Jen's investigations in the past. And people are happy to talk about it. That is music to my ears. And I love The Death of Mrs. Westaway, which is so different than the rest of her book. People wouldn't say, oh, it's just too gripping the way they do with books. She's here on Todd's birthday, when she's been absent so often. What makes someone commit a crime? And people had a little more time. As indicated in the synopsis, the book opens as Jen, a lawyer, wife and mother of a teenager, looks out her window and watches her son Todd murder a stranger. Or rather, it was tomorrow. I overall liked this novel! As a mom of three kids, the going back in time, and Jen is putting herself back into situations she's already lived, but she has so much more knowledge, so her perspective is completely different, and I loved that. Is it the epilogue that you liked? Back to before Todd killed a man, giving Jen an opportunity to solve the murder before it actually happens. Over the course of the book Jen travels back weeks, months, years and even decades through her life trying to piece together the clues that lead to her son's crime.
