THAT was a surprise! So he brought in someone else to add a little tasteless sexual assault and nudity to the film. And yet all pales in comparison to the most alarming moment that shook my drunk self to the core. The nastiness quotient here is high enough to satisfy even a long-time fan of Italian horror flicks (we are talking about a movie in which scads of women are raped by fucking fish, you realize), and the film is loaded with gore, fantastic slimy monsters, and purely gratuitous nudity, but Humanoids from the Deep also works on a second, almost satiric level. Villainous characters are discriminatory towards a Native American man.
Clearly, somebody has a lot of explaining to do, and at last, that explanation is forthcoming. Keep your eyes peeled and you'll see some off the wall shit during the melee that will have you laughing at the absurdity while adjusting the way you are sitting. I think that it gives the film a better presentation. The monsters were designed by Rob Bottin, who doesn't get nearly enough praise, especially when Rick Baker or the guys from KNB are brought up. I guess I am: I keep watching. This they do after having a look around the ruins of Johnny s cabin. Tagline: "They're not human, but they hunt human for mating. What else is there in life? The remake is nowhere near as outlandish or as gruesome as the popular original. It's this sort of attention to detail that makes Humanoids from the Deep an effective monster movie. In the remake characters exist only to create situations that drive the story forward. One shot of a decapitation followed by a close up of the monster carrying the head around was removed for the US release but is found on the foreign DVD releases of the film. The DVD is out of print and pretty expensive. The rapes are just dirty enough without being genuinely offensive or over the top.
In a more serious work I'd critique the acting and wonder "What does the director intend here? " I found the titillating aspect of this one extra disturbing: some of the sexiest bits are women stripped, savaged, thrown in the mud and raped by monsters. Yeah, loads of girls gonna be havin' some unwanted fish-babies up in here. I suggest avoiding the 1996 version of HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP and seeking out the nasty 1980 film.
Ok, what's cutting the fishing nets, blowing up boats, tipping over garbage cans and killing dogs? I mean, you have a plethora of monsters running around that your plot revolves around. This feels like a mean-spirited update of a 50s monster flick, with slimy, rubber-suit fishmen that have a taste for the flesh of human females (and I don't mean to eat). It's got smoke show women. No, the biggest change is actually two-fold. Trailers, TV Spots and a Radio Spot. Rating: Unrated (strong horror violence and gore, nudity, and language). Descriptors||United States, Metrocolor|. Sure, it has its problems, like structure problems, but the film is a lot of fun with some great gore effects. In the final battle at the harbor festival the creatures on land are defeated by setting the water on fire. Some very disturbing things are happening in the small fishing town of Noyo, California. There is a 1996 remake of this movie so don't be confused. This movie first popped up on my radar a few weeks ago, when it was recommended via the Shudder Hotline (more on that here). What the film does get right is the murderous monsters. But the film is shot in such a way as to leave them partially obscured for most of the film, choosing the 'less is more' approach in order to build mystery and tension. One of James Horner's early scores, far better than the movie deserves. I should have known better than to watch this film. Choisir un pays: Vous magasinez aux É.
It's the Roger Corman way. Do this immediately. This, of course, is largely due to the film's surprisingly great effects, from Oscar-winner Chris Walas, who, just a few years later, went on to do films like The Fly I and II and Gremlins (directed by Corman-alum Joe Dante). SIKE.., He just hired a second director to shoot these scenes and include them in the final edit without Peeters permission (can't be a legend in the industry and not be a complete scumbag).
But, given how grimy, unpolished and genuinely nasty this film has looked in the past; this print is eons sharper and cleaner than ever before. The Indian saves him, though. They grab Peggy and a gill-man, take the girl to the hospital, and take the monster back to Drake s lab. Where the film really lives up to its cult status is a wonderfully manic siege of the town's Salmon Fair. And they seem to be totally obsessed with sex.
They see a woman, they rip off her top and have at it. If you don't know who the fuck Roger Corman is then just go to IMDB and start at the top of his filmography as producer and work your way down. Like a Friday the 13th film, most of the nudity and sleaze comes before the fish starts up the car to Pound Town. There's a town festival loaded with people and loaded with Humanoids. This SteelBook edition of the film is something that fans should pick up and horror fans should look into getting. But still, I was surprised by just how bad this movie was. DVD availability: Shout! Why these are not on this disc, especially due to the fact that they were produced by the same company that produced the features found on this disc (Red Shirt Pictures) is beyond me. Some of the cues would even be recycled for later Corman movies such as SPACE RAIDERS (1983). That said, this is easily the best this film has ever looked on home video. Also can be found at Notes. While some scenes don't have any audio, seeing these deleted bits (which consist of a few dialogue sequences and two fairly elaborate nude/death scenes) is a rare treat. The shock works, not because it's genuinely scary, but because the effect looks so real, it's actually a bit unnerving.
The scenes with naked women almost seem like they were spliced in from a different, higher-budget movie. Humanoids of the Deep is another tale of science gone rogue, this time its genetically engineered salmon that have been turned into hulking humanoid fish monstrosities and are now running amok, killing all the men and raping all the women. Sure, it's silly and exploitative, but it's also a hoot to watch, particularly for gorehounds, Corman fans and cult enthusiasts. He's also the guy who (along with 2 kids) fucking died on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie in the infamous helicopter accident.
